At Croydon Pilates, we encourage kids to do one-to-one sessions with us. We currently do not offer classes for children, however, if there was enough demand, we would be more than happy to run a Pilates class just for kids.
Our team at Croydon Pilates are comfortable looking after children on a one-to-one basis, from the age of 14. If you have a child under this age and you are keen for them to do Pilates, we can also do Parent and child sessions (two-to-one) with a physiotherapist or Pilates instructor. This can be on a reformer or mat (at various locations).
Kids can do Pilates. It’s brilliant for them. Let’s look at some of the benefits:
Benefits of Pilates for Kids
Build Confidence
Pilates is a great way for children to get comfortable with body weight exercise, and exercising in general. It’s super-healthy, low impact, and safe. Children enjoy doing it, especially when they see their parents doing Pilates.
Improve Flexibility
Pilates is great for flexibility. While kids tend to be more mobile than adults, some children are still quite stiff. We often see children who have short hamstrings, for example.
Improve Core and Body Strength
A strong core is essential for sports and activities, and there are clear benefits to improving core strength. There are also benefits to improving the body as a whole, which Pilates is great for.
Coordination and Balance
Kids often do not have well-developed co-ordination skills. Balance tends to be off, and falls often happen. Some children are particularly un-coordinated, and this can be reflected in their ability to play sports to a good level. Un-coordinated children tend to fall more, and are more prone to fractures.
Stress Relief
We hope your kids are not stressed. But if they are, or they are finding there is too much pressure, exercise is a great option. We think it could really help kids with ADHD, and hyperactivity. It’s slow, controlled, and gentle. Pilates helps calm the system.
Fun and Engaging
With the right instructor, Pilates can be made fun and engaging for kids, incorporating playful elements that keep them interested and motivated. We always try to encourage fun during the sessions.
Considerations for Kids Doing Pilates
Age Appropriateness
While children of various ages can benefit from Pilates, the exercises are tailored more towards children and more straightforward. However, as a parent, just ensure that your child is intellectually ready (e.g. can follow instruction).
Qualified Instructor
It’s essential that kids practice Pilates under the guidance of an experienced instructor, and we provide that at Croydon Pilates.
Focus on Fun
It’s got to be enjoyable. While any new skill and sport does have an element of seriousness for safety and performance, we still try to make all our sessions fun and enjoyable.
Avoiding Overstraining
Children's bodies are still developing, so we go easy and slowly.
Shorter Sessions
Kids have shorter attention spans, and children most benefit from a 20-30 minute session.
Conclusion
Pilates is safe and fun for kids. We take on children over the age of 14, but email us info @ croydonpilates.co.uk if you have a younger child who wants to do Pilates.
